Taught by Jordan Hermitt
This course explores the fundamentals of art and illustration. We will dive deep into the
artistic process starting with a focus on sketching with intention to convey clear and effective visual
information. From there we’ll continue to develop their technical skills through looking in depth into
composition, color theory, and perspective—examining both practical applications and historical context;
and how those elements work together to impact mood, storytelling, and communication. We will also be
exploring several mediums such as pencil, oil pastels, painting, sculpting, mosaic, stamp making,
stained glass, etc. enabling young artists to explore and discover their niche and/or develop new
mediums.
Throughout the course, students will learn how to plan and execute their ideas, transforming concepts
into compelling pieces. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how art functions as a visual language,
allowing artists to guide the viewer’s perception and narrative interpretation. By the end of the
course, students will have a strong foundation in illustration techniques and the ability to create
purposeful, visually engaging work, while they discover their medium.
