History is more than kings and conquests—it’s the story of cultures, connections, and everyday lives.
This course explores the medieval era from a worldwide and cultural perspective, beginning in Europe
before expanding to the Byzantine Empire, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. We will examine major events
such as the Viking invasions, the Crusades, the Birth of Islam, Poland Independence, the dissolution of
the Caliphate of Spain, the Reunification of China, Hundred Years’ War, the rise of the Delhi
Sultanate, the travels of Marco Polo, and the impact of the Black Death, as well as the rise and fall of
the empires such as the Mongol Empire, the Tang Dynasty, the Shogunate, the Mali Empire, etc. and how
their history affects and influences each other. Through a cultural lens, we’ll uncover how diverse
societies shaped the medieval world and influenced the future.
