In Public Speaking and Rhetoric we will provide students with the foundational skills and techniques needed to become confident and effective communicators. We will explore the foundations of speaking in public situations and the preparation and delivery of speeches. Students will also learn fundamental skills for the future such as interviewing, the oft-dreaded toast, the feared, “Tell me something about yourself” question, and more. We will also deep-dive into finding and citing dependable sources, selecting and researching speech topics, constructing well-reasoned arguments, impromptu and memorized delivery, and peer evaluation. Students are expected to develop outlines and speaking notes, use visual aids, and improve on verbal and nonverbal delivery skills.
We will also explore the theory and the principles of rhetoric—the art of persuasive speaking—and teach strategies for crafting and delivering impactful speeches and arguments. This is especially helpful for students wanting to learn how to debate or just be able to defend their beliefs, whatever they may be. Students will also work on how to be good listeners, audience evaluation, and refine their verbal and nonverbal communication.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
