Academic Testing & Placement for New Students

Our academic program welcomes high school students who are ready to engage in a rigorous and supportive learning environment. As part of our commitment to student success, we assess each student's skills to ensure appropriate course placement.

Acceptance & Enrollment

All students who meet our general admissions criteria are accepted into the program. To help us place students in the courses best suited to their skills and needs, we require placement testing before the start of the academic year.

Placement Testing

Placement tests are administered in June, July, and August and are used to determine the most suitable coursework for each student. (Dates to be determined) Testing includes:

  1. Mathematics: Students will be assed on their understanding of middle school math concepts. Our lowest level of math will be Pre-Algebra. Students who do not pass this assessment in June can be given practice coursework and retested in July and/or August.
  2. Reading Comprehension: Students will be required to read a passage from our history curriculum and answer multiple-choice questions. Students who do not pass this assessment in June can be given practice coursework and retested in July and/or August.
  3. Writing Proficiency: Students will be asked to submit a well-structured essay that presents a clear thesis, supports ideas with logical reasoning and evidence, and maintains proper organization. Writing should demonstrate correct grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. Students will be given the opportunity to edit their submission should it not initially meet our standards.

Our goal is to ensure students are prepared for high school courses where they will thrive academically while being both challenged and supported. If you have any questions, please contact our admissions team.

Arts Auditions

Audition & Interview Day

  • Arts Students will audition based on their chosen discipline (dance, vocal, theater, visual art, etc.). They need to bring anything they’d normally use to perform or present (instruments, portfolio, etc.).
  • If they’re applying for something like film, media, or tech, they can bring a USB with samples or send us a link to their work.

Quick Fit Check

We’ll ask all students to fill out a short questionnaire on-site—just to get a sense of their personality, learning style, and how they might adjust to the Hazelwood environment.

Final Decisions

Once auditions/interviews are done, the admissions team will meet and make decisions. Families will get a letter letting them know if the student is accepted, waitlisted, or encouraged to reapply next round.
